


For the latter, we are more dependent on the documentary and literary sources, as well as on the rebuilding plans drawn after the earthquake. However, the same cannot be said of the northern and western blocks and the inner courts.

These depictions allow us to recreate with a high degree of accuracy the exteriors of the Palace and its urban context, particularly the eastern façade extending alongside the Terreiro do Paço. It is featured in most panoramic representations of Lisbon in the early modern period. The royal palace was built in the early 16th century and became the most iconic element of the city until its destruction in 1755. The project started with the recreation of the palace complex (the Royal Palace, the Patriarchal and the Opera House) given its political and architectural significance in the context of pre‐earthquake Lisbon. This project aims to recreate the memory of Lisbon destroyed by the 1755 earthquake using Second Life® technology.
